No matter how much (or how little) time you have spent in the legal services profession, you recognize this basic truth: Not all paralegals (or legal support staff) are created equal. In every office, it seems, there are standouts who seem to operate on a higher level.
You can improve your research skills, your legal writing, your familiarity with software, and other technical skills. Ultimately, however, it’s your knowledge that will truly set you apart from your peers. And the best way to stay abreast of timely information that is relevant to your world as a paralegal or legal support professional? It’s the blog.
Note: As you search the web for paralegal blogs, you may discover, as we did, that many links prove to be “dead ends.” It would appear that many paralegals have been inspired to start a blog, but far fewer stick with the practice. Nevertheless, there are a number of current and well-written blogs worth subscribing to and/or including in your online bookmarks.
Here are our favorite paralegal blogs (and one Facebook page), including a self-description from each site:
Paralegal Alliance
Our primary goal is to offer a resource where paralegals can learn, advance, and win – both professionally and personally.
The Empowered Paralegal
A Blog for and about Professional Paralegals and the Paralegal Profession
ParalegalGateway.com Facebook Page
The most important goal of Paralegal Gateway is to assist Paralegals and recognize the important role they play in the legal community.
Vicki Voisin – The Paralegal Mentor with Paralegal Career Strategies
Strategies for Paralegals Seeking Excellence
The Estrin Report
Created for Professional Paralegals — Not of a Certain Level, Specialty or Firm — But of a Particular Attitude
The Paralegal Society
A forum created to educate, motivate and inspire paralegals to engage in the pursuit of excellence for all paralegal-kind
Patti’s Paralegal Page
Cool and useful websites, apps and other internet goodies for paralegals and other legal professionals (and a few legal stories along the way).
Be sure to check out the blogs of paralegal/legal assistant groups specific to your state. Although those location-specific blogs often won’t have quite the same depth as some of the nationally-oriented blogs mentioned above, the local information provided might prove especially useful to you.
One more thing: If you want to give your career a boost, reading these blogs is a good start, but it isn’t the only option available to you. Some of the blogs actively solicit contributions from outside writers — or you can take the initiative and “pitch” them with your own story idea. By writing and posting comments to a few key blogs, you can gradually raise your online visibility — without making the commitment to an ongoing blog of your own. (Note: If your blog post story idea in any way involves your firm and/or its clients, be sure to run it by your boss before moving forward. Discretion, after all, is trait that’s highly prized in the legal profession.)
