In Texas, we like things big and bold, and the legal market in Dallas is no exception. Eighteen Fortune 500 companies, including Texas Instruments, Exxon Mobil, and Southwest Airlines, call the Dallas metroplex home, and provide a wealth of opportunities for lawyers looking to work in-house.
In addition, Dallas ranks high in multiple surveys of interest to lawyers:
- #7 in Attorney Buying Power by National Association for Law Placement (NALP);
- #13 on the list of Best Places for Business and Careers by Forbes; and
- #5 in Best Cities for Young Attorneys by The National Jurist.
Life in Dallas is equally as exciting as the legal market. If you are looking to sample Dallas’ dazzling flair, here are a few of my hometown “favorites” to sample on your next visit in the Big D:
Where to Stay
For those out-of-towners, The Joule is conveniently located in downtown Dallas and the glass-fronted rooftop pool is not to be missed.
Another option located in the heart of downtown is The Magnolia, which is easily identifiable since its rooftop boasts the iconic Pegasus. Just look for the bright red horse and you will easily find your way back to your hotel.
If you are looking for the epitome of luxury, the Mansion at Turtle Creek is a worthy indulgence and quintessentially Dallas.
Where to Eat
Pecan Lodge in the Dallas Farmers Market serves my favorite brisket and mac ‘n cheese in Dallas, or anywhere! Texans are serious about their barbeque so be prepared to wait in a long line to sample this melt-in-your-mouth masterpiece.
There is a good reason why Stephen Pyles is the go-to business lunch for those in downtown Dallas.
Pyles recently opened Stampede 66 which is a hip new Texas-style place located on the edge of downtown and is perfect for a more casual business lunch.
Where to Drink
Meet up with a business associate and sip on a latte at the Pearl Cup.
Grab a beer after work with a colleague at the Meddlesome Moth. Try the Texas beer flight for a great introduction to Texas breweries. Their draft list changes regularly, but my favorite regularly available local brew is Blood and Honey by Revolver.
Visit the mixologist at FT33 and let them customize your after-dinner cocktail.
What to Do
For the sports enthusiast, hardly a week goes by without an opportunity to cheer for one of the five professional sports teams in town.
Dine at Wolfgang Puck’s Five Sixty atop Reunion Tower or visit its newly renovated observation deck to experience a bird’s eye view of downtown Dallas.
Relax in James Turrell’s Tending at The Nasher Sculpture Center and forget that you are just on the edge of the thriving downtown metropolis.
This is the first part in a series exploring Texas and its largest legal markets. The next post will cover Austin, Texas. Please contact Jennifer Clifton at Jennifer.firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions about the Texas legal market.
